So December's optional theme was holiday stories. Any holiday. And, being the holiday junkie I am, I didn't have any in the TBR. I read those as soon as they get into my hot little hands. So, I picked a demon book instead. Yeah, that just screams Ho Ho Ho doesn't it?
The main reason I picked this particular book is because Larissa Ione is on my List of Shame. The list of authors I haven't read yet, and anytime I mention that fact, I get exclamations of incredulity directed at me. Enough already! I've read her. And...
I regret to say that I'm not sure what the buzz is all about. I did not love this book as much as I'd hoped to. Mainly because the I-so-horny demon stuff just didn't work for me. And since that was pretty much the premise of the whole book, it was a struggle to finish.
Eidolon, a demon doctor on the verge of changing into a rampaging monster if he doesn't find a mate, spends pretty much the entire book with a hard-on. That's not an exaggeration. If he's not having sex, he's thinking about having sex. Which, yeah, is probably true of most guys anyway, but hearing about his swollen member every other page got tedious.
Now I'm no prude with my reading material. I don't mind sex scenes. I don't mind explicit sex scenes. What I do mind is when the entire novel revolves around sex, and I'm supposed to buy the sexual relationship turns romantic relationship when all the characters do is get nekkid.
Our heroine was little better. A demon slayer who is actually part demon and doesn't know it. Her character has to come to terms with some serious changes in her life. She has a growth arc, which probably would have worked for me a little better if it wasn't squished in the last 100 pages.
Although the writing is descriptive and the demon world building was well done, I think it's safe to say this just isn't my cup of tea. I'm hoping her newer series works a little better for me.
